The Café
Code Black coffee, the famous Mont Blanc, fresh sarnies and a Basque cheesecake to linger over.
A warm, timber-clad room on Lygon Street — specialty coffee and sandwiches while the sun’s up, vinyl, cocktails and Guinness once it sets.

Vinyl on the turntable, a tight cocktail list, Guinness on tap, Victorian wine and late-night jaffles.

Good Measure opened on Lygon Street in 2021, started by three friends — Max Allison, Brandon Jo & Mitchell Miller — who wanted a room that could be many things to many people.
By day it’s a café in the Japanese mould: serious coffee, hefty sandwiches and a slice of something sweet. As the light drops, the vinyl comes out, the cocktails start pouring, and the room settles into a cosy little bar. Timber, house plants and vintage furniture, all the way through.
One room, two lives. Filter coffee and sarnies while the sun’s up; vinyl, cocktails and Guinness once it sets.
Code Black beans, a sage-green La Marzocco and our cult Mont Blanc — coffee taken seriously, served without fuss.
Timber, house plants and vintage furniture inspired by Japan’s neighbourhood haunts. Walk in, stay a while.
Across 486+ reviews on Google & Tripadvisor — here’s what regulars keep coming back for.
“The Mont Blanc is unlike any coffee in Melbourne — the orange and nutmeg on the whipped cream is genius. Worth the queue every single time.”
“Café by day, proper little bar by night. Came for a sando, stayed for a matcha milk punch and a record set. The vibe is unreal.”
“Warm timber, house plants everywhere and the friendliest crew on Lygon. It genuinely feels like a northside living room.”
“The Basque cheesecake and a nitro cold brew on the courtyard — my new weekend ritual. Bring your dog, they love it.”
We’re at 193 Lygon Street, Carlton VIC 3053 — in the heart of Melbourne’s café strip, a short walk from Argyle Square. Look for the flying magpie on the sign.
We’re walk-ins only — no reservations. Pull up a chair, grab a coffee or a cocktail, and stay as long as you like.
We’re open every day from 8am. Sunday to Thursday until 11pm, and Friday & Saturday until 1am. Espresso is served until 8pm, then the vinyl comes out.
It’s our signature filter coffee — a Code Black brew, lightly sweetened, crowned with whipped cream and showered with fresh nutmeg and orange zest. The thing people queue for.
Both. By day we’re a coffee-and-sandwiches café inspired by Japan’s neighbourhood spots. After dark the vinyl starts spinning and we become a cosy cocktail bar with Guinness on tap and Victorian wine.
Yes — well-behaved dogs are welcome in our courtyard. Bring the pup along for a coffee.
